TikTok campaigns can scale quickly. A video that takes off can spend a daily budget by lunchtime, and a set of test ad groups can add up faster than you planned. When a prepaid card pays for those ads, the card balance is your ultimate limit, so planning it well is the difference between campaigns that run smoothly and campaigns that stop on a Saturday night. This guide focuses on the planning rather than the button-clicking.

How TikTok draws money from a card

TikTok's ad platform offers different payment approaches depending on region and account type. In broad terms:

  • Automatic payment: ads run first, and the card pays each time spend crosses a set amount or a billing day comes round.
  • Prepaid balance: you add funds to the ad account first, and campaigns draw them down.

Check which applies to your account in its payment settings. With automatic payment, the card must cover each charge as it comes. With a prepaid balance, the card is charged only when you add funds.

Three numbers to write down

  1. Total daily budget across all active campaigns and ad groups. Include campaigns set to start later in the week.
  2. Billing threshold, if you are on automatic payment. It may change as your account history grows.
  3. Days you want the card to cover. Two to four weeks is a comfortable horizon for most advertisers.

Multiply daily budget by days, then add tax if your region applies it, and a margin of about ten percent for days that overspend. TikTok, like most platforms, can spend somewhat more than the daily budget on a given day while keeping the average in line. That product is the card balance you need.

A worked example

A small shop runs two campaigns at $30 and $20 a day, plus a $15 test ad group for a week. For a three-week card:

  • Main campaigns: $50 × 21 days = $1,050.
  • Test: $15 × 7 days = $105.
  • Subtotal: $1,155. Add a 10% margin: about $1,270.

The shop orders a card with a balance around that figure. The order page shows the total with 15% of the balance added as the top-up charge and $5.00 for the card. If the shop prefers smaller cards, it could split by campaign; one big card or several weighs the extra issue fees against the extra control.

Using TikTok's own limits as a second rail

TikTok lets you set campaign budgets and, in many accounts, an overall spending limit. Set the account limit a little below the card balance. When spend reaches it, ads pause instead of running into a failed card charge. Failed charges are worse than paused ads: they can put the account into a payment hold that takes time to clear. Spend caps and card balances covers the idea, and the payment hold checklist covers the cure if it happens anyway.

Planning for scaling days

The reason TikTok cards run out unexpectedly is usually success: a creative performs, someone raises budgets, and the card was sized for the old numbers. Agree a simple rule with whoever manages the account: when a budget increases, recalculate the card's remaining days. If they drop below a week, order the next card at once. The new card has to pass our review before you can add it. Paid orders are usually checked and issued within a few hours.

Adding the card without errors

  • Reveal the card details in My Cards with your authenticator code and copy them within the minute they show.
  • Enter the billing address shown with the card exactly, including the postal code.
  • Check that your ad account's currency is compatible with the card. A mismatch can cause refusals; see currency mismatch declines.
  • If the card is refused, check the details once, then stop and read what decline messages mean rather than retrying repeatedly.

Test campaigns on separate cards

New creatives, new audiences and new markets are experiments. Giving experiments their own small card keeps them from eating into the budget of campaigns that already work, and makes the cost of each experiment obvious afterwards. Testing a new channel on a small card describes the approach in more detail.

End-of-campaign housekeeping

When a campaign ends, download TikTok's invoices or receipts for the period, record which card paid, and remove the card from the ad account if it will not be used again. Leftover balance can go towards the next campaign on the same account or another online expense. Larger amounts on cards that were never charged may be refundable under our refund policy; ad cards are usually charged, so plan sizes to keep leftovers modest.

Quick answers

Why did TikTok spend more than my daily budget today?

Platforms often allow daily spend to exceed the budget on some days while averaging out over time. Keep a margin on the card.

Can I switch from automatic payment to a prepaid balance?

It depends on your account and region. Check the payment settings or ask TikTok's support.

See the pricing page for card totals and how it works for the order steps.
