Google Ads offers two very different ways to pay, and which one you use decides how a prepaid card behaves. With automatic payments, Google charges your card after your ads run. With manual payments, you put money into the account first and ads run until that money is used up. Availability depends on your country and currency, and you may be asked to choose when you create the account. This guide compares the two settings from the point of view of a card with a fixed balance.

Automatic payments in one paragraph

Ads run, costs accumulate, and Google charges the card when costs hit your threshold amount, or when the monthly billing day arrives, whichever happens sooner. The threshold usually starts low for new accounts and can rise as the account builds a payment history. Your card must have enough balance each time a charge arrives. If a charge fails, Google retries and, if it keeps failing, stops your ads until the balance is settled.

Manual payments in one paragraph

You make a payment into your Google Ads account in advance, using the card. That amount becomes your account balance. Ads run and draw it down; when it reaches zero, ads stop until you pay again. Google does not charge the card on its own between those payments.

Using automatic payments with a prepaid card

Automatic payments work well when spend is steady and predictable. The card needs to cover each threshold charge, so:

  • Find your current threshold in the billing settings. Expect early charges to be small and frequent.
  • Size the card for a month or a campaign, not a single threshold. A card balance that equals the threshold leaves no room for tax or a second charge.
  • Set an account budget in Google Ads if your account offers it, slightly below the card balance, so spending stops before the card refuses a charge.
  • When roughly a week of spend is left on the card, order the next one. Our review step takes a little time, and Google needs the new card added before the old one runs dry.

Our article on spend caps and card balances shows how to combine the account budget and the card limit.

Using manual payments with a prepaid card

Manual payments make a prepaid card almost risk-free: you decide when the card is charged and for how much. A typical routine:

  1. Order a card with the campaign budget as its balance, plus a small margin for tax if Google adds it to payments in your region.
  2. In Google Ads billing, choose to make a payment, enter the card details and pay the amount.
  3. Monitor the account balance. When it runs low, decide whether to continue; if so, make another payment from the same card if it still has balance, or from a new card.

Manual payment amounts are usually shown before you confirm, so you always know exactly what leaves the card.

Adding the card details

Whichever setting you use, enter the card details carefully:

  • Reveal the details in My Cards with your authenticator code and copy them within the minute they stay visible.
  • Use the billing address shown with the card, not your business address, unless they are the same.
  • Select the country that matches the card's billing address.

Google may run a small verification charge when a card is added. That amount is temporarily unavailable on the card until it is reversed. Failed verification charges explains what to do if that test itself fails.

Which should you pick?

If your account offers both and you value a hard, simple limit, manual payments are the natural fit for a prepaid card. If you run steady campaigns and want them to continue without manual top-ups, automatic payments work as long as you keep the card ahead of your spend. Some advertisers start with manual payments while testing and switch to automatic once a campaign proves itself; check whether your account allows switching later, as Google restricts this in some cases.

Quick answers

Why does Google charge my card more often than monthly?

On automatic payments, every time spend reaches the threshold a charge is triggered, so small thresholds mean frequent charges.

Is tax added to Google Ads charges?

In some countries it is. Check your invoices and add it to your card sizing.

Card totals are on the pricing page, and the how it works page covers ordering. Keep receipts as described in reading ad invoices.
