Gift spending has a way of escaping budgets. A birthday here, a wedding there, a holiday season with a dozen people to think of, and the total only becomes clear when the statements arrive. A dedicated prepaid card for gifts sets the budget before you start shopping and makes every gift purchase visible in one place. When the card is empty, the gift budget is spent. It is the digital version of the envelope of cash some families have used for generations.

Plan the gift budget first

Before ordering the card, list the people and occasions the budget should cover. A simple table is enough:

PersonOccasionDateBudget
SisterBirthdayMarch 4$60
ColleagueLeaving gift (shared)March 20$15
ParentsAnniversaryApril 11$80
NephewGraduationMay 30$50

Add a line for shipping and gift wrap, which can easily add ten to fifteen percent, and a small allowance for occasions you have not thought of yet. The total is the card balance.

Order the card

The order total is the balance plus 15% of it plus $5.00 for the card. Use the pricing calculator to check. Covering a whole season or half a year on one card spreads the fixed fee over many gifts. Make sure the card's expiry date is after the last occasion on your list. Paid orders are usually checked and issued within a few hours.

Shopping with the card

  • Check the total, including delivery, before paying. Gift wrapping, card messages and express delivery are often added at the end.
  • Use the billing address shown with the card and the recipient's address for shipping. Most stores handle different billing and shipping addresses without trouble.
  • Mark orders as gifts where the store allows, so the packing slip does not show the price.
  • Record each purchase next to the person's name in your table, with the order number.

Timing deliveries

Online gifts fail most often on timing, not money. Order at least a week before the date for domestic delivery and longer for international. In busy seasons, carriers slow down and stores set last order dates; note them. If an item will arrive late, consider a digital gift such as an e-book, a subscription or an experience voucher, which can be sent on the day.

Digital gifts and gift cards

Store gift cards and digital vouchers are easy last-minute gifts. A few points to keep in mind:

  • Some stores limit which payment methods can buy their gift cards, and a few exclude prepaid cards. If the payment is refused, check the store's gift card terms.
  • Gift cards and vouchers may expire. Tell the recipient the expiry date.
  • Only buy gift cards from the official store or well-known retailers. Gift cards sold at a discount by strangers online are a common scam.
  • Never pay anyone with gift cards because they asked you to by phone or email. That is a classic fraud pattern.

Returns and exchanges

Recipients sometimes need to exchange a gift. Many stores offer gift receipts that allow an exchange or store credit without revealing the price. If the gift is returned for a refund to you, the money returns to the gift card that paid for it, so keep that card valid through the return window. If the card expires first, the store may offer store credit instead. What to keep after you buy explains which receipts are worth saving.

Group gifts

For a shared gift, such as a leaving present from a team, one person can collect contributions and pay from a small card ordered for that gift. The card's receipt and the store's order confirmation are a clear record for everyone who chipped in. Settle contributions before ordering, so nobody is left waiting to be paid back.

Holiday season planning

The end-of-year season concentrates gift spending into a few weeks. A dedicated card for the season, ordered in early November, gives you time to watch for sales without the risk of overspending in the excitement. When the card runs out, the season's shopping is done. If you find a balance left after the holidays, using up leftover balances suggests sensible ways to spend it.

Why not just use a budget app?

Budget apps tell you when you have overspent. A card with a fixed balance prevents it. Both are useful; many people use the app to track and the card to enforce. The card also keeps gift shopping off your everyday bank card, so a single compromised store in a busy season cannot touch your main account. Weekly spending cards applies the same idea to everyday online purchases.

Quick answers

Can I send a virtual card itself as a gift?

Cards are issued to your account and protected by your sign-in and authenticator. They are not designed to be handed to someone else.

What if a gift costs more than I planned?

Take it from another line in your budget, not from a new card. That is the point of the plan.
